So, this isn’t some sappy, romantic article on ways to “Survive Your Long-Distance Relationship.” Here’s the real problem: a third party has entered my relationship, causing fights, miscommunication and anxiety. She’s sleek, sexy and smooth. Her name is … the iPhone 3G.

When your beloved lives a plane ride away, the phone becomes your main source of staying connected, but iPhone — you are making this a challenge … am I just supposed to turn the other cheek because you are an otherwise wonderful multi-media device?

Both my boyfriend and I have an iPhone. For those of you who are owners, you know it is notorious for dropping calls, having terrible reception, and overall, they’re really awesome for playing Plants vs. Zombies and Sudoku, but for actual phone use, my five-pound Motorola from 1997 worked better.

In all seriousness, these technical difficulties have either caused arguments or added to an already tense moment. For instance, the other day we were having a little argument over GChat, when he all of the sudden logged off — which, in instant messaging terms, is the equivalent of hanging up the phone or getting the door slammed in your face. OH. NO. HE. DIDN’T.

But apparently, he had logged off to call me, and my phone didn’t even ring. He’s thinking, “What the hell, pick up the phone!” This goes on for a while, until I get a “voicemail” notification that he called. I tried calling him back, but none of the phone calls would go through. The final blow was when I got a delayed text from him saying: “I tried to call you. Where did you go?” AHHH!

Eventually, we managed to reach each other and everything was totally fine, but if it weren’t for our iPhones, those two hours of anxiety would have never happened. Because so many people have been complaining about the poor service, AT&T has introduced a reception tower to place in your home or office that amps up your reception.

Initially, I thought: Yes! A solution! But then the bitterness set in. Let me get this straight: I not only paid $300 for a “superior” phone, I also shell out over $100 a month in fees. Now you want me to fork over another $150 so I can get service? I’m insulted.

I’m still undecided on what to do. I know there is Skype and video chatting, among other sources of technological-aided communication, but I’m stubborn, and I want to be able to call my boyfriend when I want to.

It’s a simple request. So, I guess — deep in my heart — I know the solution: I just have to wait for the iPhone 4G to come out. I’m sure that will solve everything.

When eBay bought Skype from Joltid in 2005, the whopping US$2.6 billion price tag didn’t include the Global Index peer-to-peer software that the world’s biggest Internet Telephony system is based on. And now, Joltid is trying to cancel Skype’s license on the Global Index technology in a move that threatens to shut Skype down once and for all. Is it just a canny commercial chess move to force eBay to sell Skype back to Joltid at a huge discount – or is it the end of Skype as we know it?

Skype is not only the world’s biggest Internet Telephony engine – it’s also the world’s biggest international voice carrier. Developed by the brains trust behind peer-to-peer filesharing system Kazaa, it has quickly risen to dominate the market. But while it’s successful with users, it has proven to be a crippling investment for eBay, which bought Skype for US$2.6 billion in 2005, and has subsequently revalued it down by nearly a billion dollars to US$1.7 billion.

Now, details are emerging of a legal arm-wrestle that threatens to shut Skype down completely. When eBay acquired Skype from Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis’ company Joltid in 2005, the hefty pricetag didn’t include a core piece of Joltid’s peer-to-peer communications code, called Global Index. Global Index is the peer-to-peer communication layer that Skype is built on top of – and it’s also the basis of Joost, an upcoming P2P video streaming technology. The critical Global Index code was licensed to Skype moving forward.

With eBay struggling to get its money’s worth from Skype, and finding little synergy between the communications software and its main online auction engine, the company started looking to spin Skype off in an IPO that would get it operating as its own business – certainly, with nearly 450 million users and the lion’s share of the market, it’s a platform with potential.

But after a falling-out between Skype and Joltid, Joltid has claimed that, through certain legal actions, Skype has invalidated its license on the Joltid P2P code – which is imperative to the Skype engine. Skype is scrambling to develop alternative software to do the job, but with the final court battle set for June 2010, it appears unlikely that this will be possible – particularly without breaching Joltid’s IP.

This excerpt from a quarterly report filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission explains eBay’s tenuous position – emphasis is ours:

Skype licenses peer-to-peer communication technology from Joltid Limited pursuant to a license agreement between the parties. The parties had been discussing a dispute over the license. In March 2009, Skype Technologies S.A. filed a claim in the English High Court of Justice (No. HC09C00756) against Joltid Limited. Following the filing of the claim, Joltid purported to terminate the license agreement between the parties.

In particular, Joltid has alleged that Skype should not possess, use or modify certain software source code and that, by doing so, and by disclosing such code in certain U.S. patent cases pursuant to orders from U.S. courts, Skype has breached the license agreement. Joltid has brought a counterclaim alleging that Skype has repudiated the license agreement, infringed Joltid’s copyright and misused confidential information. On the basis of, among other things, the parties’ mutual dealings since the execution of the license agreement, Skype asked the English High Court for declaratory relief, including findings that Skype is not in breach of the license agreement, that Joltid’s notice of breach and subsequent notice of termination are invalid, and that Joltid has certain indemnity obligations in relation to the U.S. patent proceedings.

Trial is currently scheduled for June 2010. Although Skype is confident of its legal position, as with any litigation, there is the possibility of an adverse result if the matter is not resolved through negotiation. Skype has begun to develop alternative software to that licensed through Joltid. However, such software development may not be successful, may result in loss of functionality or customers even if successful, and will in any event be expensive. If Skype was to lose the right to use the Joltid software as the result of the litigation, and if alternative software was not available, Skype would be severely and adversely affected and the continued operation of Skype’s business as currently conducted would likely not be possible.

So here’s where things get interesting from a commercial standpoint; this legal challenge could completely shut Skype down – so naturally enough, that black cloud will scuttle any IPO plans that eBay had to raise money from its difficult child.

If eBay is able to come up with an alternative platform that keeps Skype’s customers happy while abandoning Global Index and not causing any IP issues then it can go ahead with an IPO. But this is a herculean undertaking that even eBay admits it’s not very confident about. Given it’s already a cash sink for eBay, you’d have to wonder if the company is likely to throw big dollars at developing or acquiring another technology.

But if June 2010 comes around and eBay hasn’t sorted anything out, and the court case starts looking like it’s going Joltid’s way, then suddenly Joltid will be in an excellent position to put in a bargain-basement offer to buy Skype (and its projected US$1 billion 2011 revenue) back from eBay and laugh all the way to the bank.

With the future of the world’s favorite Internet Telephony service at stake, it will be fascinating to see how this plays out.

These reports are very useful to us – they help us to detect patterns in spam activity, as well as allowing us to disable the accounts of individual spammers. So you’re not just reporting a single spammer – you’re helping us to reduce the total amount of spam on Skype.
Finally, some general advice, and a very simple message: don’t click links or open files in messages from people you don’t know and trust, and indeed even from people you do trust if you are not sure of the content. We’ve deliberately made this more difficult – links in contact request notifications are un-clickable – but it’s a rule which doesn’t just apply to Skype. And there’s more general security advice in the Security section of our website: you’d be wise to follow it.

Break-ups in general can be nasty things, but a theme seems to happen after them that is often seen, well at least amoungst my friends, and I’m pretty sure yours.  And it doesn’t seem to be narrowed down to females either, it happens amoungst men too. So before the break-up the partner that leaves may start talking to someone else, and here is where the online world comes into play so much more than it ever did.

Whether they act on anything depends on the persons morals regarding cheating.  They might start talking to someone online who sparks off something in them that they no longer get from their current partner and they miss it, and may realise that they need it more than they need to be with their partner.  For others its a security blanket that if they do decide to leave they have someone to go to, although their not happy they dont want to be alone, could also be for the security of knowing  that they can get someone.  Leaving someone, especially when you know they still love you is HARD!  So it can help you take that next step you’ve been avoiding and instead settling for the normal that you know. You may not relish stepping out into the scary dating world you may not have been in for a long time!  I’m not saying that this scenario is the best, but if your unhappy and someone making you face that happens only through some romantic talk with someone, then maybe its ok, but acting on it I can’t say is…..if you leave someone you will no doubt break their heart and you should respect them enough to not break their trust too!

Often these flings will not work out because once you out in the dating world, suddenly your a new entity and you can go two ways, panic and dive into a relationship straight away because being alone is too scary and then your back at square one.  Or you can go into ‘gonna enjoy myself and have some fun!’ mode.  This one is where I think a pattern lies.  All of my friends and maybe even myself have gone through this phase.  For some they go on mad dating spree’s and have many people on the go, enjoying the flirting and fun that comes with dating.  This for the right person can be good, but when does it become more a break down?  What happens when they realise that with all this fun doesn’t come the security and safe feeling of a relationship.  The knowledge too that the persons you having fun with are also seeing other people, playing the field as it were.  We can tell ourselves that its just a laugh and that after being bogged down in a relationship we need to let loose a little and that’s ok, but at what point does all this fun become too de-sensitising?  I agree its fun getting to know people, and getting interest from the opposite sex is a great ego boost! But after so long the chats on Skype, POF, MSN, and facebook wont be enough.  Then the real scary dating part happens!

A light can be placed above the screen and turned on during the day.

Put a humidity gauge and thermometer inside the tank to monitor the temperature and humidity.

Don’t use gravel unless it is absolutely necessary. Some times the Jadekins will lunge for the cricket and miss the cricket and eat the gravel. This is dangerous.

I never used to like using Facebook, but over the past few months have become increasingly addicted to it! Initially I used it to keep in touch with family, but now it seems I use it to keep in touch with EVERYONE. Gone seem the days when I used to call friends and family over the phone, when I can send them chat on Facebook, or message their inbox my mobile almost seems redundant. Facebook is well designed that even the most novice of internet users can work out how it works. My granddad has a Facebook account! And I was almost shocked when my newsfeed stated my granddad was single with a broken love heart, despite him being single for many years lol.

I myself don’t do any applications on facebook, and only join the xkype-tails things because I fear Daz may get me But I have many many friends who while away the hours becoming obsessed with Mafia wars, or Farmville! Not mention the wannabe Gus Hansen’s playing poker tournaments for millions But we cannot forget the love matching programmes where you can flirt with people you like the look of, and also all the social questions about people on your friends lists. I get many many requests and sadly I have to say ignore them ALL. I choose not to use Facebook that way, because I know too well how easily it can be to become obsessed by them and spend all your time competing for the best fish tank or fairground!

Its got to the point now that to know what’s happening in our friends lives we look on their Facebook status. It’s easier for people to let everyone know what’s happening in their lives via their page than individual telephone or person to person contact. Which I guess is a good and bad thing. Recently though my niece was poorly and had to go into hospital, her mum posted it on her Facebook so everyone would know, but I have a quite a few friends and so missed the feed So now I make a point or going through a few hours to make sure I haven’t missed anything! Lol

So to the point of this article, up until recently I never really looked at anyone’s pages except the newsfeeds. But a friend of mine, who will not be named, but she knows who she is Opened my eyes to the wealth on information you can find out about someone though not just their Facebook, but google, MSN, Yahoo to name but a few. I discovered some scary facts about what people can find out about you. But to concentrate on Facebook, I started to look at peoples pages and noticed some interesting stuff, and some that makes me question how much I openly trust people.
I know most of the people on my Facebook, and will add new people who I wish to get to know on there too. I have a guy who liked me and wanted to go out on a date with me. I had always discouraged the idea while he was working away, but when he returned to the UK considered the possibility. Now by chance I happened to look at his profile on Facebook, and through looking at his Facebook wall was able to piece together that he had already started seeing a girl, despite him still asking me out! So on this occasion Facebook helped me out, but what does your Facebook say about you??

I’ve looked at the Facebooks of people who I have added recently and this is what I have noticed. Some are always adding girls, and some have a lot of girls messaging them…..you’re thinking to yourself, there’s a man playing the field. But then I thought I have a lot of male friends and they always write on my wall, but there is nothing untoward in my case, so why should I assume it is for them? Other than their male I also have seen ones where they have nothing but application posts, their high scores etc. But rare posts from people or friends, does this mean they’re not popular? Or could it be that they just don’t use this medium very much or also that the people they know also don’t use this medium.

Should we even care what our Facebook says about us? Just like our dating profiles they do tell people something about us, but not necessarily the real story. They can read you conversations with your friends, see what groups and causes you join. See who you’re adding and whose pictures you comment on. My advice, don’t worry about it lol I don’t believe that you should feel the need to censor anything you do, and that if a person wants to get to know you that they should do it directly and not via your actions on your Facebook But still just be aware slightly that this does happen and people do judge. But also don’t lose site of the fact that sometimes it’s better to tell your life story or narrative in person! So get off ‘Friendface’ and SEE your friends too!

My final advice to you is to Google yourself; see what comes up and what people can really find out about you! You may be pleasantly surprised and I hope not horrified! For advice on data protection issues and removing content from the internet, do some research or ask me for some advice.

I decided to nose around some people’s profile on the popular free dating site Plentyoffish.com or POF as the regulars like to call it.

Looking at the profiles did make me think about how we describe ourselves. I have often seen some rather humorous profile’s that have made me sit here and chuckle. I also have seen some really sad ones, which I found quite touching. Oh and of course the downright nuts and the boring strings of full stops, and to be filled in soon’s.

Here is an example of one in particular that is still making me laugh as I think about it:

“Wanted to be a Cowboy now for about a yeeeeeeeeeeeee haaaaaaaaaaaaaa , No truth is Me dads a boxer and me moms a poodle. So if you read this description would you respond? Would you put yourself out there and say ‘hi’ and risk possible rejection and the inevitable ‘read deleted’ status? Well I would hope not, I did respond lol to see if he would turn out to be a sane guy looking for love, but using humour and shock value to attract you in…this wasn’t the case Nice guy but obviously just online to have some fun….He talked of me washing his orange penis, so I’m pretty sure he’s not looking for long-term!

While looking at one guys profile he stated some very valid points about male descriptions in particular it went:

“Good god your lucky to catch me, cos usually I’m naked scuba diving in the arctic, paragliding from the pyramids, mountaineering up Everest or base jumping from the Eiffel tower, and if I’m not doing that then I’m just normally you know, swimming with sharks on a Sunday morning then tootling out of a plane (parachuteless) to roller blade down the side of an erupting volcano. Backwards. On one leg.

Damn. If only you could see the photo of me posing against the side of my distinctly average 1995 bmw convertible. The one of me in my re-fitted kitchen, or the one of me on my dirty motorbike, next to my shed, on my shiny new I phone, oiled up showing off my pecs n nasty tatts then you’d be like seriously interested, Right?

Is it just that I’m normal, and down to earth, and don’t particularly like the idea of jumping off a cliff, or oiling up and leaning against my car on a Sunday morning, or does everyone else on here just have super impressive past times, and photos of themselves that just coincidentally show off their best assets, oiled up bodies included, that, lets face it, really shouldn’t be. Maybe they do it to make me look boring, normal and down to earth? Shit. Good point, didn’t think of that. Or is it just that they surfed the wave rider, once, on that ship, on holiday, 7 years ago, then fell over in baby oil whilst putting up their new shed when they got home?

I’m a down to earth, genuine, honest Tall Dark N Average laaaaaid back uncomplicated and easy-going cheeky chap that loves life, having fun, and generally having a good time. He’s pretty much summed it up, I have read some profile’s that make me feel I need to go climb the apple tree in my garden, or go jump off the roof of my cottage holding a towel as a parachute. Then I think naa I’ll just have a beer People feel the need to make themselves look interesting and adventurous believing that it will attract a more suitable mate, sadly when they realise that your ‘surfing the waves down under’ equates to actually a ‘Boogie board at Skegness’ they may find themselves gravely disappointed!

In an ideal world we would all live full and exciting lives. But unfortunately the daily grind of work, study, family and other commitments means we have to get our heads down and get on with it. Some people manage that quite well and can fit that into their lifestyles and that’s great. But don’t get down because you haven’t based jumped yet. Or down another bottle of wine/crate of beer because you don’t have a classic Merc or a Harley!

As I have wrote in many articles before despite online dating being about ‘Sell, sell, sell!’ it really doesn’t help you because when they meet you, they will see your just a normal person, getting on in the world, trying to find someone to share it with.

When you’re describing yourself just try and be honest. Don’t go on to much, as there will be nothing left for them to want to know about you, especially if you have written your life history on there! Lay down the basics, who you are, what you like, what you want and what you can offer. If you’re funny try and put that across…I guess you can relate it to writing a CV for love. Keep it simple to the point and make it as interesting to read, while still being honest.

So what’s my profile like??? Well I totally stole it from a profile I saw once that I really enjoyed reading, and was very similar to me. I copied and pasted it and amended it to suit I’ll share it will you, hope you like me!

“Why am I here? Well I’m looking for some new mates and to meet some interesting people to chat too.

I can be quite creative and love all things that bring that out in me. Music and comedy are what keep me going. Big Bill Hicks & George Carlin fan but also love Bill Bailey, Jimmy Carr, Eddie Izzard, etc anyone funny pretty much so I’ll finish with a joke….

Remember: Lay down the basics, who you are, what you like, what you want and what you can offer. Don’t lie. Try and be yourself, if they don’t like it, you wouldn’t be right for them anyway. Try and meet! In a safe location of course, because meeting someone in person really is the only way to know if you’re going to like each other.
